The Sant Esteve hermitage area is the most distinctive viewpoint in this part of the district. From here you can see the whole western Vall d'Albaida and as far as Villena and Caudete, and on clear days with a westerly wind you can even make out the Mediterranean Sea on the horizon. It is a wonderful spot for sunrise and sunset.
The site is crowned by the hermitage of Sant Esteve, built in the 17th century and restored in 1991.
Getting there
- On foot or by bike: follow the Camí de les Boles, which continues from Avinguda Vicent Gironés in the Sant Rafel quarter, to the junction with the Moixent road. From there, paths away from the road lead to the signposted Sant Esteve track on the left.
- By car: same route; the track is paved.
Things to do
- The picnic area has barbecue spots and toilets. There is little shade, so avoid the middle of the day in summer.
- The hermitage, looked after by the Llumeners de Sant Esteve, has a shelter area for overnight stays; ask the town council for the key.
- The adventurous can walk from the hermitage to the Avern cave.
- Every year the Sant Esteve pilgrimage takes place here, with mass and a mountain folk festival. Dates vary, so check the Events section.
