Raining in Ontinyent? No problem: the town has plenty of indoor plans and most are close to each other. Before you head out, check the weather and the day's events.

Museums (almost all free)

  • Giants Museum (Gegants i Cabets), in the Palau de la Vila, which also houses the Tourist Office. Free. Monday to Friday 9:00 to 14:00 and Saturdays 9:30 to 14:00.
  • Textile Museum: the story of the capital of Valencian textiles, with real looms. Free. Tuesday to Sunday mornings (Tuesday to Friday until 16:30).
  • Festival Museum, in Plaça de Baix: Moors and Christians costumes. Saturdays and Sundays 11:00 to 13:30, €1.
  • MAOVA, the archaeology museum. Free. Tuesday to Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
  • Natural Sciences Museum: animals from around the world and ancient Egyptian remains. Free, by appointment on weekdays.

Opening times may change in August and at Christmas: check each page or ask the Tourist Office (+34 962 91 60 90).

Climb the bell tower

The Santa Maria bell tower, the tallest in the Valencia region, can be visited inside with the Colla de Campaners (the bell-ringers' group): Sundays at 10:30, except on days when the bells are being rung. Tours start from the Bon Pastor side door and last about an hour. Take the chance to see inside the church too.

Cinema and theatre

  • Cinema: Cineápolis El Teler, in the El Teler shopping centre (Carrer Pintor Segrelles, 1-3), has 7 screens.
  • Cineclub Utiye: since 1968, art-house films, documentaries and shorts, with one or two screenings a week at the El Teler cinemas.
  • Teatre Echegaray: the restored 1910 theatre, with drama, music and dance all year round. Its programme appears in the events calendar.

Indoor sport

The indoor pool (Carrer Vicent Lluís Montés i Penadés) is open from September to July, every day: weekdays from 7:00 to 22:00 or 22:30, Saturdays 9:00 to 20:00 and Sundays 9:00 to 14:00.

Shopping and the market

  • The Municipal Market, covered and right in the centre: Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, 8:00 to 13:30.
  • The El Teler shopping centre, with shops, a supermarket and the cinema.
  • And since Ontinyent is a textile town, hunting for a good blanket is a very local thing to do.

Eat well

A rainy day calls for something from the oven: a good arròs al forn, local charcuterie and sweets. See all the dishes in Food.

With children

The Giants Museum and the Textile Museum are big hits with kids, and the cinema or the indoor pool can rescue any afternoon. More ideas in Ontinyent with kids.

When it clears up

After the rain, the Clariano river runs fuller and the Vila old town looks lovely. But mountain paths and the rocks at the Pou Clar get very slippery, so wait for them to dry before going.
